Upcycled planters

I’m always looking for new ideas for planters that are a little different. When i re-did my kitchen, I saved one of the cupboards. I removed the door and lined it with thick bin bags. Merri laughed her head off at me trying to stick them down! I drilled holes in the bottom for drainage, added stones for making sure and filled it with compost. Merri wanted it by her Wendy house so we moved it to where she wanted it and cracked open the seeds. We planted a fair few but for some reason only one plant grew. Merri was heartbroken so on her pocket money day we went and picked a few plants that were on sale. She came home and wanted them planted straight away! She’d put some plastic flowers in there so this other one wouldn’t get lonely and decided they had to stay (at least until she found a pretty plant pot to go by her front door and put them in there instead!) so we took them out and put them back once we’d planted them all! They’re the yellow ones hiding at the back in the picture!

Another that worked well last year (until the dog decided footwear was very edible – she soon changed her mind again after eating wellies packed with compost, stones and roots!) was wellies! I don’t have pictures of those but now Merri has grown out of her frog wellies we’ll be doing it again so I will add photos at a later date. You need to put some fairly large holes in the bottom. If they’re too small they close up again and don’t drain. To stop the rubber cracking in the bad weather a friend suggested a couple of thick coats of PVA glue which worked remarkably well against everything except my canine’s canines! Fill the toes and bottom with stones and either compost if you’re planting seeds or, if they’re small like Merri’s inevitably are, then just take the plant from the pot with a bit of compost underneath and a sprinkle over the top. Merri added some coloured gravel to match the colour of the wellies (blue in this case) but like everything else, totally your choice!

UPDATE

We’ve decided to plant our rosemary cutting in one of the wellies. I’m waiting on my basil cutting for the other! Just using the above method this is what we ended up with.
